Asbestos in Soil Contamination
When Lendlease were undertaking the demolition and redevelopment at the Western Sydney Stadium formally Parramatta Stadium, they needed a licensed asbestos assessor and occupational hygienist to help them negotiate the legacy asbestos and other contamination left in ground.
- Early engagement of a licensed asbestos assessor and occupational hygienist was the key to this project being successful and helped LendLease successfully negotiate site contamination, building works, workers health and comping with Work Health and Safety legislation.
Challenge
The Western Sydney Stadium Project (WSS) involves the demolition and redevelopment of a state of the art 30,000 seat stadium and surrounding entertainment facilities. The new stadium will provide western Sydney with a venue for a variety of sporting and entertainment events.
PRA have been engaged to provide ongoing occupational hygiene services during the remediation works in the form of technical advice and support to Lendlease and sub-contractors, to minimise potential health and safety risk.
How we helped
PRA started the project by reviewing the environmental reports and Contaminants of potential Concern of which allowed us to prepare a site specific Occupational Hygiene Management Plan (OHMP) for the site. This document formed the foundation for the management of the occupational hygiene component of the bulk and detailed excavation works across the Western Sydney Stadium Project. The Plan was developed in accordance with all relevant guidelines and legislative requirements and was used by Lendlease (Principal Contractor) as a guide when implementing safe work procedures throughout the entire project.
As well a development of the Plan PRA had full time on site presence with a Licensed Asbestos on site conducting a range of different activities, including:
- Daily Asbestos Fibre Air Monitoring
- Clearance Inspections
- WHS site observations
- Dust Monitoring
- Asbestos and Hazardous Awareness Training
- Respirator ft testing
- Decontamination training
Over the course of the project PRA conducted 499 Asbestos monitoring shifts and over 30 Clearance Certificates and trained more than 1,264 people.
